Abstract
Dans le troisième tome de l’édition de 1744 de son Histoire de la Nouvelle-France , Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix emprunte la forme épistolaire pour relater « un voyage fait par ordre du roi dans l’Amérique septentrionale ». C’est l’occasion pour l’historien d’emprunter momentanément la posture de l’essayiste et de revisiter les lieux communs sur les Sauvages dans la perspective singulière de leur rapport à l’éloquence. Mais, en lieu et place d’une relation objective des pratiques observées, dont l’enjeu serait d’exposer simplement ce qu’il a vu, Charlevoix opte pour le registre épidictique et entreprend de faire l’éloge des compétences oratoires des autochtones de manière contrastée, confrontant les identités sauvages et européennes à travers une construction rhétorique informée d’abord et avant tout par des connaissances livresques et mise au service d’une ambition prescriptive et morale plutôt que descriptive et anthropologique.
