Abstract
A range of identities associated with radio—personal, mobile, global and local—comfortably fit into a digital frame. Radio can be viewed both as a personal and as a background medium. In an article on declining radio listenership, Julia Day writes that the BBC World Service lost 3 million listeners in 2001, its lowest listening figure since 1998. Radio-Canada, rethinking its place as a public broadcaster in an international context, developed a fresh approach by launching a new radio network, Espace musique, in September 2004, dedicated to diversity that would allow it to play a strong role. In India private radio has come more than a decade after private television. Radio-casters around the world face challenge of trying to reflect regional realities within distinct territories, but retain the fundamental role of acting as a link between cultures. A grassroots revolution in radio that is allowed to sprout in remote pockets through local initiatives would represent an appropriate outcome of the digital era.
