Le Guatemala est, comme la plupart des pays d’Amérique centrale, pluriethnique et plurilingue. Il est depuis la conquête divisé en deux groupes : d’une part les Indiens d’origine maya, groupe majoritaire frappé par une extrême pauvreté et implanté dans les hautes terres peu fertiles ; les ladinos, métis et descendants d’Espagnols, essentiellement urbains.
