Abstract
Le présent article s’intéresse à la façon par laquelle les définitions juridiques de la famille se perpétuent dans la culture populaire et expose les débats récents au Canada portant sur la légalisation du mariage entre couples de même sexe et la criminalisation de la polygamie. En examinant l’immense succès du documentaire La marche de l’empereur, récipiendaire de la Academy Award, l’article pose des questions sur les images de la famille et du mariage, évoquées dans ce film, que se sont appropriées des militant-e-s des deux camps. L’article explore comment ces contestations de la notion traditionnelle de la famille au Canada ont eu pour effet paradoxal d’ériger une frontière plus rigide autour de la famille traditionnelle monogame et conjugale. L’auteure découvre en la protection du mariage une valeur fondamentale dans le contexte canadien.
