Abstract
This paper examines the legal and constitutional effect of the federation of the Australian Colonies in 1901. There is an examination of the influences shaping the terms of the new constitution and how the federal system has evolved since. There are comparisons with legal and constitutional developments in the countries which most influenced the process of Australian federation and which enjoy greatest similarity in legal or constitutional terms. Notable among these are the UK, USA, Canada, NZ and Switzerland. As Sweden is the only country not already mentioned which has maintained unbroken democratic rule throughout the 20th century, some comparisons have been drawn with Sweden as well.
