Abstract
Charles Mathieu Mame a tenté entre 1815 et 1817 de faire vivre une librairie française à New York. On sait peu de choses de son itinéraire personnel et professionnel, mais ce seul cas, reconstitué à la manière d’une enquête policière, permet une plongée croisée dans plusieurs univers : dans le New York commercial des lendemains de la Guerre de 1812 et des Guerres napoléoniennes, dans celui des migrants français dont le nombre et la variété apparaissent dès lors au grand jour, et dans celui du livre français. Mame n’étant qu’un élément d’une vaste nébuleuse en la matière en ce début de 19ème siècle. Charles Mame devient ainsi une porte d’entrée qui permet de repenser la Jeune République au sein du monde atlantique jusque dans les premières décennies du 19ème siècle.
