Abstract
Histories, cultures, practices, and embodied experiences of tourism and holiday making are thoroughly gendered, and anthropologists have been at the forefront of documenting and analyzing the intersections of gender, tourism, and holidays. Questions of difference are central to anthropological accounts of the possibilities and limitations of desire, pleasure, and mobility that stem from the naturalization of gender differences. The initial conceptual focus on gender roles in non‐Western tourism has shifted over the decades to an emphasis on power relations imbued in masculinities, femininities, and sexualities, and on issues of regulation and inequalities within travel and vacationing practices. The stoppage of nonessential travel brought on by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic demanded an ongoing and incisive gender and critical approach to the linked questions of which bodies and subjects leave home and return, and for what quests are holidays made.
