Abstract
En décembre 1864, quelque seize mois après la mort du peintre, Alexandre Dumas prononçait à Paris une conférence biographique dédiée à Eugène Delacroix. Les mots que Dumas réserve à l’auteur de La Mort de Sardanapale sont marqués par une admiration enthousiaste, par le souhait farouche de tenir l’objet de son apologie à l’abri de toute critique péjorative. La vigueur du dithyrambe de Dumas à l’égard de Delacroix se fonde sur un désir tout aussi vif ; désir où se confondent, comme dans toute tension de l’Éros, mimétisme et antinomie ; désir où l’amitié entre ces deux génies se confond souvent avec leurs actes de création. Cette réflexion se nourrit des écrits de l’homme de lettres et du peintre et tente d’analyser la relation puissante et complexe, personnelle et artistique, qui unit les deux hommes.
