Abstract
D’une manière générale, l’essai traite de la vitalité expressive des têtes de Daumier et examine le dessin d’une tête d’expression du British Museum. D’une part, nous rattachons l’origine de l’esquisse à des théories que proposait Lebrun en 1656, et, d’autre part, nous attirons l’attention sur l’influence des trois-cent quatre-vingt-un mascarons, sous les consoles du Pont Neuf de Paris, sur un groupe de dessins de Daumier. Nous retraçons l’histoire des mascarons de leur création, aux alentours de 1606, jusqu’à leurs restaurations de 1816 à 1820 et de 1852 à 1855.
