Abstract
En science économique, le Methodenstreit (« conflit des méthodes ») est généralement décrit comme une simple querelle entre raisonnements déductif et inductif, et entre théorie et histoire. Nous effectuons un retour sur les oppositions épistémologiques, méthodologiques et analytiques ayant conduit au Methodenstreit. Nous présentons la pensée de Carl Menger, l’un des fondateurs de la théorie économique néoclassique, et sa vision de l’économie pure, et poursuivons sur l’économie socio-historique de Gustav Schmoller, leader de la jeune école historique allemande. Nous soulignons également certaines des influences qu’auront ces protagonistes en sciences sociales, notamment sur l’école autrichienne d’économie, sur la sociologie et sur l’institutionnalisme américain. Nous concluons que le Methodenstreit constitue un véritable conflit quant à la légitimité d’une science autonome des phénomènes économiques, mais également quant aux fondements épistémologiques de l’étude de l’économique. Nous soulignons la nécessité de revenir au Methodenstreit pour interroger le rôle des théories du droit naturel et de l’histoire en sciences sociales.
