La consommation totale d'énergie du secteur commercial québécois a augmenté de 7, 3% entre 1990 et 1998 (à l'exclusion de l'éclairage des voies publiques). Cet accroissement est attribué à une augmentation de l'activité économique mesurée en fonction de la surface de plancher (12, 9%), des changements dans les conditions météorologiques (-4, 1%), des changements mineurs dans la structure (0, 02) et au changement de l'efficacité énergétique (-0, 8%). À l'exception des établisseements de santé, toutes les composantes du secteur commercial québécois ont enregistré une amélioration de leur intensité énergétique brute. Malgré l'expansion de leur activité telle que mesurée par la surface de plancher, l'intensité énergétique brute de l'ensemble du secteur commercial s'est améliorée en passant de 1, 99 GJ/m 2 en 1990 à 1, 89 GJ/m 2 en 1998. Une comparaison avec l'ensemble du Canada donne des résultats plutôt similaires.
