Income Replacement Rates among Canadian Seniors: The Effect of Widowhood and Divorce

Dans cet article, à partir d’une base de données longitudinales et en utilisant des modèles à effets fixes, nous évaluons l’effet que produit un divorce ou le décès du conjoint ou de la conjointe, après l’âge de 55 ans, sur les taux de remplacement du revenu pendant la retraite. Nos résultats montrent que, chez les femmes, la séparation et le divorce ont un effet négatif plus important que le veuvage. L’effet de la séparation et du divorce est plus important chez les femmes des familles à revenu élevé, où les régimes privés de retraite et les revenus de placement jouent un rôle plus important. Et, chez les femmes à faible revenu, le fait d’avoir un revenu qui dépend des régimes de pension publics réduit l’effet du divorce sur les taux de remplacement. À l’opposé, chez les hommes, la séparation et le divorce ont peu d’effet sur les taux de remplacement, et le veuvage accroît les taux de remplacement chez ceux qui ont un revenu moyen ou élevé.
