Interview with Darcy Hoffman who was born in 1924 in Gore son of farming parents. Explains paternal grandparents who were German arrived in New Zealand in 1872, settling in Southland and working for railways, putting in the Dunedin to Invercargill line. Mentions schooling in Mandeville, Gore and Invercargill technical high school. Also mentions joinery apprenticeship before going to sea in 1942. Explains he was deck boy on the Blue Star ship Canadian Star carrying frozen meat to England. Describes ship and crew. Mentions pay and duties, including gun training. Talks about later trip leaving New York in a nine-knot convoy when a submarine torpedoed the ship killing sailors and civilian passengers. Describes abandoning ship and floating on a raft for hours until pickup by the corvette Anemone. Notes the heaviness of kapok lifejackets. Talks about conditions of the Anemone: accomodation, food and clothes. Mentions survivors leave then returning to sea.
