L’objet de cet article est de rendre compte de l’intérêt que les économistes français du XIX e siècle ont porté au mot « richesse ». Pris dans son sens « scientifique », le mot « richesse » a donné lieu à de vives controverses (I re partie) Entendu dans son second sens, c’est-à-dire comme la « richesse de la France » ou celle des Français, il a soulevé les problèmes d’évaluation, qui susciteront après 1870 un intérêt croissant de la part de ces économistes (II e partie). Avec la création d’un impôt sur le revenu en France en 1916 et la multiplication et l’amélioration des statistiques fiscales qui en résulteront, les études sur la « richesse seront progressivement délaissées au profit de celles sur les “revenus des Français”.
