Abstract
Rock art research in Canada is experiencing a revival and ontological questions are increasingly explored, especially across the Canadian Shield (among the Anishinaabeg and Cree) and in southern British Columbia (among the Coast and Interior Salish peoples). Canada holds a special place in ontological inquiries as it is here that Alfred Irving Hallowell worked. Subsequently, he published his influential paper that contributed to the emergence of the ontological turn in Anthropology. Explorations of rock art and relational ontologies challenge our disciplinary categories. This paper traces the history of ontological rock art studies in Canada and concentrates on recent examples from the Canadian Shield and southern British Columbia. The paper will then discuss how relational ontologies challenge our understandings of images , landscapes , and categories , such as rock art.
