Reconociendo la importancia de la ruralidad y la urbanidad para elaborar políticas públicas y estrategias económicas, en este artículo se presenta la actualización de un índice de ruralidad para los municipios de México construido con técnicas multivariadas vía un proceso jerárquico analítico, en el que la comparabilidad en el tiempo fue prioritaria. El índice describe la distribución dinámica y geográfica de la ruralidad en México y muestra que hay avances hacia la urbanidad, aunque persisten municipios muy rurales. Para ejemplificar el uso y pertinencia del índice se ha evaluado un programa de vivienda.
