Drag from the Inside Out: Examining Drag Agency in the Winnipeg Theatre Scene

Abstract
In this piece I explore the relationship between contemporary drag artistry and theatre in Winnipeg. Through a series of interviews with drag artists Vida Lamour De Cosmo and Miss Gender, I examine the working relationship between drag artists and theatre makers. I also interview participants of the Prairie Theatre Exchange’s drag class to consider how drag and workshop training function within a traditional theatrical context. Through this work, I take up questions about how the recent popularity of drag influences audiences, how theatre can productively and problematically borrow from drag, and the unique contributions drag artists can make to the world of theatre.
