Abstract
Contractual mandatory retirement – that is, an age-based retirement enshrined in an employment contract or collective (employer-union) agreement and permitted by state legislation – is a feature of most labour markets and workplace arrangements in industrialized nations. Over the past three decades the so-called Anglo-Saxon nations (the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) have gradually eliminated this practice, with the United Kingdom (the UK, hereafter) having done so most recently in 2011 (see Chapter 8 ). However, to date, mandatory retirement remains widespread in many other economically developed and developing nations with, for example, most continental European nations permitting this practice.
