Cet article questionne dans un premier temps la définition de l’archéologie industrielle, lui préférant la locution plus nuancée « archéologie des mondes industriels ». Il constate le basculement, dans les appétences des chercheurs, en direction du champ sans doute plus attractif du patrimoine industriel. Celui-ci fait l’objet d’une analyse conduite à partir de cas d’études, qui aboutit à une cartographie revêtant la forme d’un triangle équilatéral mettant en balance les éléments naturels, les réalisations matérielles d’origine anthropique et le patrimoine immatériel. Au vu de ces approches, il apparaît très clairement que les aires de l’archéologie et du patrimoine ne se recouvrent que partiellement. On aborde enfin, dans l’immense foule des traces laissées par l’industrie, celles pour lesquelles la certification patrimoniale se révèle réfutable, ouvrant ainsi le champ d’un héritage passif de l’Anthropocène.
