La définition de musée doit être tout à la fois neutre et prospective, descriptive et normative. Facilement compréhensible par tous, elle en traduit l’essence même. Pour tenter d’apporter une contribution à cette quête définitoire, nous portons notre analyse sur le terrain, celui des musées eux-mêmes. Cet exercice ne se veut nullement une apologie de ces musées, non plus qu’une analyse exhaustive de leurs pratiques. Il n’a encore moins la prétention de présenter des modèles qui soient universels. Nous regardons deux musées ontologiquement très différents, un musée d’art et un musée de société. Ce sont deux musées qui ont une réputation internationale : le Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (MBAM) et le Musée de la civilisation. Ces deux musées, implicitement, nous suggèrent peut-être que l’inclusion de tous et l’enracinement dans la cité, l’implication sociale et le rôle politique au sens premier du terme constituent des éléments normatifs d’une définition ouverte de musée
