Dans cette contribution, nous interrogeons l’héritage de la pratique de l’industrie à travers les paysages qu’elle nous a laissés, visibles ou plus subtils, patrimoniaux ou repoussants, ce qui nous conduit à en proposer une typologie. Une mise en garde s’impose sur les marques du temps appliquées aux réalisations humaines, qui ont comme corollaire la transformation de la quasi-totalité des « paysages » nés de l’industrie, sous l’action des effets de la nature quelquefois secondée par les êtres humains. Manifestation de l’Anthropocène, cette rétroaction aboutit à des « méta-paysages » dont le déchiffrage est l’affaire du chercheur. Celui-ci remonte ainsi aux « paléo-paysages » qui se révèlent pourtant en mouvement quasi-perpétuel dans l’épaisseur du temps. Nous proposons une représentation triangulaire aux fins d’analyser les différents types de systèmes paysagers imposés par l’industrie, en fonction du déterminisme naturel – hydraulique, ressources de la géosphère ou de la biosphère – et de l’organisation des sociétés.
