Abstract
Cet article interroge les modalités de distinction de soi en lien avec le besoin de reconnaissance sociale et sa réalisation au sein de l’espace marchand. La contribution de Hegel y est mobilisée afin d’éclairer comment la définition de soi ne peut être conçue indépendamment de l’existence politique, laquelle implique un conformisme social à travers l’incarnation de l’universel dans la particularité. Mais puisque la sphère politique est aujourd’hui soumise à la sphère économique, l’éthique hégélienne apparaît renversée, de sorte que les individus se conforment désormais à l’universel par le biais de pratiques singularisantes promues par le modèle néolibéral. Dans ce contexte, l’analyse proposée soutient que les pratiques consuméristes constituent autant de manières d’affirmer un caractère singulier suivant un conformisme de la différence et que la personnalité narcissique contemporaine se présente comme une réponse adaptative à la grammaire éthique actuelle.
