Abstract
This chapter summarizes the pre- and intraoperative factors that predispose to higher risk, their pathogenesis, prevention, and/or treatment. These factors include idiosyncratic characteristics of the horse, cardiorespiratory function, muscle blood flow, and logistic aspects such as proper positioning on the surgery table, anesthetic time, type of surgery, and infrastructure available to facilitate the recovery. Equine anesthesia has the highest reported risk of mortality among domestic veterinary species. Anesthetic complications mostly affect the following systems: musculoskeletal system, including fractures and post-anesthetic myopathy; central nervous system/spinal cord pathologies, including myelomalacia and nerve compression/paralysis; cardiovascular system, including cardiovascular collapse from hypovolemia, hypotension and reduced cardiac output; respiratory system, including hypoxemia, airway obstruction and pulmonary edema; and gastrointestinal system, including abdominal complications, such as colitis or peritonitis in 13% of non-colic cases, and development of post-anesthetic colic.
