Dans cet article, j’explore le rôle de la confidence comme pratique d’auto-révélation porteuse d’un potentiel thérapeutique. En analysant des billets d’intention adressés à Saint-Frère André à l’Oratoire Saint Joseph (Montréal, Canada) et des récits de trajectoires religieuses de Francoquébécois issus du baby-boom, je montre que ces deux formes d’expression du soi suivent des schémas narratifs qui permettent de donner sens à des réalités vécues dans la modernité, et ce faisant, de canaliser leur potentiel perturbateur pour la cohérence identitaire de l’individu. Qu’il soit médiateur ou destinataire, imaginé ou réel, l’interlocuteur occupe une place essentielle dans ce rite d’intimité si bien que dans le dispositif de guérison, mise en sens et relationnalité apparaissent comme un couple insécable. Car elle offre un espace propice à cette (re)mise en forme du sens et donc du soi, la rencontre ethnographique pourrait constituer un archétype de cet exercice thérapeutique. Aussi les débats concernant la présence, même passive, de l’ethnologue sur le terrain et l’asymétrie de la relation ethnographique sont-ils transposés dans la perspective nouvelle du care.
