La question de l’expérience est centrale pour comprendre la façon dont des problèmes publics émergent, impulsent de nouvelles politiques, conduisent à la transformation de milieux de vie, façonnent en retour des histoires de vie. Elle est ici resituée en relation à l’histoire du mouvement réformateur aux États-Unis, à la naissance de l’enquête sociologique et à la pensée pragmatiste de la démocratie au début du 20e siècle (ici représentée par John Dewey, mais aussi George H. Mead, Jane Addams, Mary P. Follett et Robert E. Park). Mais qu’est-ce que cette expérience ? L’objectif est de réactiver des catégories et des hypothèses pragmatistes pour décrire les troubles de l’expérience, leur conversion en situations problématiques, la part de l’émotion et de l’évaluation dans la canalisation de l’attention publique, et sa réorientation par l’attribution de causes et l’imputation de responsabilités. Dans la perspective d’une écologie de l’expérience publique, on rappelle enfin la place centrale de l’enquête et de l’expérimentation, avec leur dimension esthétique, dans la formation des problèmes publics.
