À partir du constat du « paysage sensoriel » complet (Berchet) qui se manifeste dès Atala, cette contribution vise à aborder la question des synesthésies chez Chateaubriand. Le côté novateur de ses descriptions américaines tient à la saturation, sur le mode du cumul, de tous les sens concernés. Peut-on dès lors parler d’une prolifération de synesthésies, comme le voulait Remy de Gourmont ? Cette plénitude des données sensorielles descend du sensualisme du xviiie siècle, mais elle se trouve confrontée avec l’absence de perceptions et le vide (Richard). La culpabilité chrétienne d’une part et, d’autre part, la tentation nihiliste s’opposent à cet empire des sensations. Qui plus est, l’enracinement de l’auteur dans la poétique néo-classique semble exclure une écriture du mélange équivoque. Mais, de fait, la prose de Chateaubriand présente une tension constante entre l’adhésion de principe au classicisme du tournant des Lumières et une modernité pré-baudelairienne, et la levée de l’auto-censure est évidente surtout dans ses dernières œuvres (Mémoires d’outre-tombe et Vie de Rancé). L’analyse des synesthésies de Chateaubriand est en tout cas motivée par la contamination d’éléments distincts voire discordants qui marque sa production à plusieurs égards (« enchantement » lexical, style polyphonique, hybridation des genres).
