Abstract
Dans la première moitié du VIIIe siècle, le duché d’Aquitaine (que certains historiens osent appeler « royaume ») est sans doute la principale force politique opposée aux maires du palais pippinides, puis aux rois carolingiens. Pourtant, les origines de cette Aquitaine ducale se perdent dans un flou relatif, car celui qui a longtemps été considéré comme son premier maître au VIIe siècle, le « duc » Félix, n’est mentionné que dans une unique source, le premier recueil des miracles de saint Martial de Limoges. Or, cette source est problématique et il est bien possible que Félix n’ait en fait jamais existé ; les origines du duché d’Aquitaine auraient alors été « oubliées » au sens premier du terme. Le présent article se propose d’interroger l’absence de mémoire des origines concernant le duché d’Aquitaine au VIIe siècle, mais aussi la construction historiographique opérée postérieurement afin de combler cette lacune documentaire.
