In this paper, the Sommerfeld half-space problem is revisited and an analytical solution of the scattered electric fields excited by a vertical electric dipole (VED) above a layered half-space is proposed. The traditional solution is associated with the Sommerfeld-type integral, which is difficult to evaluate due to the oscillatory and slowly decaying integrand. The scattered electric fields are obtained from the intermediate Hertz potential decomposed into two integrals, and a rigorous closed-form solution in the near and far field regions is presented for each term. A numerical evaluation of the solution for different impedance half-planes, i.e., seawater, wet earth, dry earth and lake water, validates the accuracy of the proposed solution at various frequencies and distances from the antenna.
