Cet article propose une réflexion sur la psychoéducation en tant que discipline et pratique. La psychoéducation est une discipline appartenant aux sciences sociales. Elle a été fondée par Gilles Gendreau au Québec, dans les années 1960. Cette discipline s’est construite autour des concepts d’adaptation et d’environnement dès sa création. Aujourd’hui, les psychoéducateurs et psychoéducatrices sont amenés(es) à intervenir dans des milieux de plus en plus différents et auprès de personnes d’horizons variés. Il est donc nécessaire de faire évoluer les concepts sur lesquels repose la pratique psychoéducative. En se focalisant sur les personnes aux capacités différentes, les auteurs montrent que la façon dont est défini le concept central d’adaptation amène deux problèmes. Le premier est le manque de prise en compte de l’environnement dans la pratique psychoéducative. Le second est l’approche conformiste de l’accompagnement psychoéducatif. Le modèle de développement humain – processus de production du handicap (MDH-PPH) est proposé en réponse aux problèmes soulevés.
