Abstract
Ernest Hemingway arrivò in Turchia come corrispondente di guerra per documentare la guerra greco-turca nel 1922, per conto del quotidiano «Toronto Star Daily». Nell’arco di due mesi, visitò Istanbul, Mudanya e la Tracia orientale. Il modo in cui ha descritto la regione, l’atmosfera di guerra, i rifugiati in Tracia e la gente comune in un frangente storico fuori dell’ordinario ha scatenato il dibattito tra storici e critici letterari. Questo articolo analizza in che modo la narrazione della regione da parte di Hemingway, anticonvenzionale ed innovativa, ha dato luogo a interpretazioni contrapposte. In tal modo, il contributo sostiene che la rottura operata da Hemingway rispetto all’immaginario romantico del “magico Oriente” ha reso le sue opere (sia i suoi dispacci giornalistici che i testi letterari) avvincenti e uniche.
