La gestión de los residuos sólidos urbanos (RSU) es un desafío importante en todo el mundo, siendo insuficientes los estudios de su composición. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue establecer la tasa de generación, la composición física y la valorización por reciclaje de los RSU en áreas residenciales de La Habana. Se obtuvo que la tasa de generación promedio fue de 0,7 kg/persona-d, similar a otras ciudades del área geográfica. Para estudiar la composición física, los RSU se clasificaron en 11 ítems y los residuos orgánicos representaron el porcentaje mayor. Cinco componentes de los RSU en La Habana son prometedores para las actividades de reciclaje, alcanzando los porcentajes mayores el papel y el cartón. Los resultados presentados constituyen un aporte al estudio sobre el Plan de Manejo Integrado de los RSU en La Habana.
