Shared-Aperture Enabled Integration of Sub-6 GHz and Millimeter-Wave Antennas for Future Multi-Functional Wireless Systems

Abstract
We propose and present a unit cell for developing a compact five-layer, dual-band scalable antenna array operating in both sub-6 GHz and millimeter-wave (mmW). This high-gain and broadband antenna makes use of a shared-aperture concept comprising of a perforated patch stacked with a square loop antenna working in 3.6~3.9 GHz as well as a 3×3 antenna array operating in 25.2~30.4 GHz for dual-band operations. Theoretical and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed antenna scheme.
