A Compressible Cavity-Backed E-Textile Antenna for Body-Centric Communications

Abstract
Presented here is the design and implementation of a light-weight wearable E-textile antenna for body-centric radios at 2.6 GHz. The antenna consists of a bracket-shaped slot, which is supported by a textile cavity on the back so that unidirectional radiation is achieved. A 50-Ω coaxial cable with SMA connector is utilized to feed the antenna. The inner conductor of the coax is extended to connect to the top wall and the outer conductor is soldered to the bottom wall of the cavity. The designed antenna was fabricated in-house using flexible fabric. The antenna gain measured in anechoic chamber at the resonance frequency of 2.62 GHz is better than 6.5 dB. The front-to-back ratio (FTBR) of nearly 15 dB and the reflection coefficient of lower than -20 dB are obtained.
