Abstract
Dans cette conférence (introduite par Florian Michel) prononcée en décembre 1939 à l’Université de Montréal, É. Gilson pose la question, connue depuis le xvi e siècle avec Grotius, devenue cruciale quarante ans plus tard grâce aux débats sur le droit d’ingérence, de la légitimité d’un pays à intervenir dans un conflit militaire qui n’est pas le sien, notamment face à un tyran. Critiquant vertement le « Neutralisme » de certains catholiques américains, É. Gilson pose la question de la légitimité – et de la nécessité – de l’intervention des USA dans le conflit entre la France et l’Allemagne nazie, en réactualisant la théologie augustinienne de la justa pax .
