PREFÁCIODoenças negligenciadas, como a hanseníase, são causadas por agentes infecciosos ou parasitas.São endêmicas em populações de baixa renda.Outra característica é que os investimentos em pesquisas, produção de medicamentos e controle são relativamente reduzidos.A hanseníase é uma doença crônica, cujo agente é a bactéria Mycobacterium leprae, pode acometer todas as pessoas.A alteração ou perda da sensibilidade térmica, dolorosa e tátil em partes do corpo são características desta doença.A prevenção precoce é muito importante para reduzir o quadro clínico.Desta forma, o presente livro retrata informações sobre a experiência social, desempenho funcional e prevenção de incapacidades de pessoas que possuem a doença, assim como a importância da interprofissionalidade para melhor qualidade de atenção.Em nossos livros selecionamos um dos capítulos para premiação como forma de incentivo para os autores, e entre os excelentes trabalhos selecionados para compor este livro, o premiado foi o capítulo 5, intitulado "Interprofissionalidade e cuidado às pessoas com hanseníase: o que aprendemos em um projeto de extensão".
