Functional verification, being an integral and essential part of IC/ASIC and FPGA design, has been gradually adopted into computer engineering curriculum as an individual course in an increasing number of universities in recent years. This paper presents the critical factors that affect the selection of designs to be used in a functional verification course. A design example that is selected based on those factors is used for measuring a sets of learning outcomes. The results indicate that, if selected systematically according to well-articulated selection criteria, even a functionally simple design can accomplish effective teaching and learning objectives and acceptable evaluation of learning outcomes.
