Abstract
Les maux dont souffrent les démocraties latino-américaines trouvent leur origine dès l’indépendance des nouvelles républiques. À cette époque, les nouveaux dirigeants affirment les principes de liberté et d’égalité dans des sociétés intégrant en partie des traits constitutifs du mode de production esclavagiste. Par conséquent, les différences sociales reposent sur des discriminations ethnoraciales. Les élites locales se montreront par la suite peu enclines à partager un pouvoir dont elles s’estiment naturellement dépositaires. Au fil du temps, des couches plus modestes de la population ne vont pas se priver de contester cette volonté de maintenir un statuquo structurellement inégalitaire. Des forces politiques contestataires répondront à une partie de ces attentes, quitte à mettre en œuvre un nouvel ordre démocratique en rupture avec le libéralisme classique des origines.
