Toutes les enquêtes quantitatives probabilistes s’appuient sur une base de sondage. Or, celle-ci est généralement présentée comme donnée alors que sa constitution est une opération complexe, nécessitant des choix méthodologiques rarement objectivés. Dans le cadre d’une enquête sur 14 quartiers socialement et spatialement diversifiés, nous avons réalisé nos propres bases de sondage, comportant au total 17 113 logements. Cette recension a permis d’ouvrir une boîte noire qui concerne tout autant les statisticiens publics que les ethnographes ayant une ambition de représentativité et d’identifier les principales difficultés de cette opération : accéder à tous les logements, sous le regard dubitatif voire hostile des habitants ; distinguer, à partir de la rue ou du palier, ce qu’est un logement ; et créer un système de codage standardisé malgré la diversité des contextes résidentiels.
