Abstract
Le débat sur les restitutions renvoie à des enjeux éthiques, politiques, institutionnels et professionnels. Les demandes de restitution des biens culturels s’imposent désormais en tant qu’enjeux de premier ordre pour la gestion des collections et des institutions patrimoniales du secteur public. En nous appuyant sur les cas de la Suisse et du Canada, deux fédérations, cet article tente de mettre en relief l’importance des institutions et des rapports intergouvernementaux dans la construction d’un mode de prise en charge des demandes de restitution de biens culturels. De plus, ces deux États ne sont pas traditionnellement reconnus pour être d’anciennes puissances coloniales, au même titre que le sont la France, la Grande-Bretagne ou la Belgique, mais les sociétés et leurs institutions culturelles sont tout de même liées à cette histoire mondiale du colonialisme, notamment parce que le Canada est une colonie de peuplement. Par conséquent, cet article illustre les formes distinctes que prennent ces questions en Suisse et au Canada.
