Participant aux affaires publiques, cotoyant les cercles de privilegies de sa communaute (Terrebonne), Francois-Hyacinthe Seguin est un fervent catholique, lecteur de Voltaire, pourfendeur des revolutions liberales et rationaliste. Son journal, redige quelques annees avant la rebellion, releve a la fois du genre memorialiste, du journal intime et des notes personnelles. Il offre aux lecteurs un portrait savoureux et teinte d'ironie de la societe bas-canadienne de l'epoque : du simple journalier de Terrebonne aux grands hommes politiques de la colonie britannique, rien n'echappe a la plume coloree et incisive de son auteur. Le journal temoigne de la vie communautaire, du pouvoir local et des enjeux de societe lies a la democratie parlementaire. Pourtant, bien plus qu'un simple portrait des mœurs sociales ou politiques, ce journal d'un loyal de la bourgeoisie canadienne-francaise donne voix a des idees et des discours que l'histoire contemporaine a trop souvent ignores.
