Abstract
La Franc-maçonnerie n’est pas la seule à alimenter l’imaginaire des influences occultes. Comme par un effet de miroir, l’Église romaine elle-même a suscité des accusations similaires. Au XVIII e siècle, la dénonciation du « complot jésuitique » acquiert une telle force qu’elle aboutit à la dissolution et à l’interdiction de la Compagnie de Jésus dans plusieurs états, y compris parmi les plus catholiques. Aujourd’hui, les médias – ou la littérature avec l’affaire extraordinaire du Da Vinci Code – alertent régulièrement l’opinion publique sur le poids de l’Opus Dei et de ses réseaux sur certains milieux dirigeants. Mais il existe aussi une authentique société secrète catholique : l’Ordre des Chevaliers de Colomb. Les Chevaliers de Colomb sont assez peu connus car ils sont une institution essentiellement américaine. Cette véritable Franc-maçonnerie catholique est née aux États-Unis, son organisation, son mode de fonctionnement et son imaginaire sont profondément marqués par la culture américaine et notamment par ce qu’elle a de plus exotique pour les Européens, d’où notre difficulté à cerner le phénomène. Des États-Unis, les Chevaliers de Colomb ont étendu leur action à tout le continent américain, au Canada où s’est notamment constituée une branche francophone au Québec et dans les différents pays d’Amérique latine et surtout au Mexique où ils ont joué un rôle important. Or, les Chevaliers de Colomb ont emprunté leur forme à la Franc-maçonnerie et ils constituent, depuis maintenant un peu plus d’un siècle, l’une des composantes du lobby catholique conservateur outre-Atlantique.
