Abstract
L’article analyse le concept de peur dans la collection systématique des Apophthegmata Patrum. Cette source constitue une synthèse représentative de la doctrine ascétique du monachisme primitif et permet ainsi de nous éclairer sur un thème important de la pensée et de la pratique des Pères du désert. Ce que l’on se propose de montrer c’est que la peur est activement recherchée et entretenue comme instrument servant à produire un état d’esprit particulier de l’ascète. Loin d’être une émotion spontanée et passive, elle constitue un objet artificiel capable, de par son aspect paradoxal, de joindre les dimensions ascétique et mystique de l’expérience monastique, et donc d’ouvrir à la perception d’une altérité transcendante. Ce qui remet en question les interprétations de la religion, tant scientifiques que théologiques, qui en font une réalité passive de l’humain.
