Abstract
À la fin du xvi e siècle, le commerce maritime à La Rochelle est contrôlé par les protestants. La traite négrière n’est qu’un des trafics du port de La Rochelle jusqu’à la seconde moitié du xvii e siècle et occupe, surtout au xviii e siècle, une part importante dans les armements des négociants. Le commerce « en droiture » avec le Canada et les Antilles est relayé par le commerce triangulaire plus coûteux et plus risqué mais aux profits considérables, d’autant que ce « trafic infâme », selon Voltaire, n’est pas condamné par la religion protestante. Le synode national des Églises réformées du royaume de France assemblé à Alençon en 1637 justifie l’esclavage mais « exhorte les fidèles de ne pas abuser de cette liberté d’une manière qui soit contraire aux règles de la charité chrétienne » et de les instruire dans la religion. Des protestants, hommes des Lumières au train de vie élevé, sont écartelés entre leurs intérêts et les débats portés par les philosophes du xviii e siècle. Si le mouvement abolitionniste est très largement protestant, il est surtout porté par des non-conformistes (Quakers) ou des groupes liés au mouvement du Réveil d’origine anglo-saxonne. Un courant qui se confirmera en France au xix e siècle.
