Cependant, la mer trop agitée cette nuit-là avalera ce “rien du tout” qui ne possède “ni éducation, ni santé, ni argent!” (176). Dans le petit village d’El Jadida, “L’étrange affaire du cahier bounni” crée un vif débat au sein de la population lorsque l’administration scolaire impose l’achat d’un cahier d’une couleur indéfinissable. Pourtant, cette expérience marquera le début de la démocratisation , du développement économique et politique d’un pays en quête identitaire. Se libérer des modèles extérieurs pour trouver sa propre place est aussi le thème principal de la quatrième nouvelle “les numéros fous du DHJ”. Ici Zahidi, le patron atypique du club de foot d’El Jadida, se transforme en “visionnaire incompris” (100) lorsqu’il chamboule les numéros de ses joueurs et commence alors un vrai mouvement de libération en permettant à chacun d’entre eux de s’émanciper des exemples étrangers pour enfin “devenir eux-mêmes” (99). A travers le récit de ces tranches de vie, Fouad Laroui réussit avec beaucoup d’humour et de lucidité, à mettre la lumière sur les peurs et les aspirations de jeunes Marocains. S’il n’hésite pas à traiter des sujets sensibles avec parfois une certaine légèreté, c’est pour mieux nous faire comprendre toute l’importance qu’il attache au respect et à la tolérance, ces valeurs humaines fondamentales que sa plume défend admirablement bien. This is one of the best novels I have read in the past couple of years. Leblanc has created a stunning portrait of a Montreal parole office and its employees, who meet regularly with ex-cons they jokingly call their invités: mainly, a prostitute (Sandrine), a pedophile (Gaspard), a frustrated hip-hop lyricist (Sullivan), a former crack dealer (Vincent), and a schizophrenic man (Sylvain). The probation officers themselves—the sarcastic François, the anal-retentive Patricia, and the idealistic Marjolaine—are themselves curiously entertaining. They interact with all the bile and weirdness one expects from a small cadre of underpaid probation officers who are just beginning to realize they have passed the peak of their professional lives. All of this while waiting for their charges to commit more of the crimes that landed them in jail in the first place. Whether (and how) most of the characters actually reoffend is another story. In fact, wondering this is what drives the story so seamlessly forward: who are these ex-cons, and what will they do now? The format, recognizable, encourages us to ask this question. Quinze secondes is one of those novels that presents its first few chapters like short stories, devoting each chapter to an apparently unrelated character (at least in terms of introducing the invités). One realizes early on that these chapters are designed to Reviews 861 appear unrelated; one is not surprised when they become increasingly interconnected . Starting about halfway through the novel, Leblanc very ably weaves characters together, at a faster and faster pace, until—say, three-fourths into the book—one begins to guess who might meet up with whom, and under what circumstances.
