Abstract
En 1889, Raffaëlli conçoit Les Types de Paris en rassemblant, en regard de ses estampes, les textes d’écrivains représentatifs du champ littéraire. Pour accompagner les dessins de Raffaëlli, Mallarmé compose sept petits poèmes, dont deux seront repris dans Poésies sous le titre Chansons bas. Trois fils d’interprétation guident notre lecture : – il s’agit de situer Les Types de Paris dans la tradition de la « littérature panoramique » et de rapporter l’échange entre les arts à la recherche d’un genre moyen , entre le genre élevé du livre d’artiste et le genre bas du journal illustré. – Il s’agit de voir se répondre deux modes d’appréhension du réel : naturaliste selon Raffaëlli, symboliste selon Mallarmé. – Il s’agit enfin de dire les enjeux politiques de cette représentation des petites gens, qui doit composer avec la conscience de la lutte des classes mettant en crise les idéaux républicains.
