Abstract

Boise State University (ID) Jason Herbeck Lepage, François. Les abeilles. Montréal: Triptyque, 2013. ISBN 978-2-89031-842-7. Pp. 188. $20 Can. Allison Pelletier and Xavier Normandeau, detective inspectors of two different divisions of Montréal’s police, are assigned a dirty bomb case where a modicum of radiation is released into the air of a sector of Montréal. The case will lead in three different directions: Al-Qaida, Hells Angels, and Opus Dei. The first story focuses on Abdelkébir Dhabi who is killed in the blast—he is the possible Al-Qaida link. His story is one of alienation and radicalization. Having immigrated to Canada from Morocco via Spain and France, having lost his sister, his wife, and finally his son, he turns towards extremist Islam to satisfy his need for revenge. Inspector Normandeau’s history is also examined at this point. A rather average officer, he is working on a doctoral dissertation dealing with the politics of economics: “Être d’accord pour être en désaccord serait admettre qu’il y a réellement des contradictions dans le monde et que les connaissances ne convergent pas”(69). Abused to the umpteenth degree is the tale of suspect two, the thirty-five-year-old drug dealer-pusher Pierre-Paul Courtemanche. He is an adept thief who moves to Montréal, becoming more and more hardcore, and a member of Hells Angels. His propensity towards violence has him also join a neoNazi group. At this point, the brilliant career of Allison Pelletier interrupts the narrative. Particularly interested in criminality and community management, she exposes the...

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
