Whats in a think tanks mix of interventions? Plugging into politics and policymaking in Canadas knowledge regime

Abstract
This chapter outlines the history, organizational profile and support network of three Canadian think tanks or think tank-like organizations (the C.D. Howe Institute, the Parkland Institute and the Manning Centre) to illustrate how they integrate the Canadian knowledge regime and policy advisory system. It provides an overview of how think tanks become enmeshed in national polities and explains how Canadian institutions constrain and permit different ways of plugging into politics and policymaking. The chapter then shows how each of the think tanks under study has carved out their own niche, be it in elite policy circles, the War of Ideas or electoral politics. In so doing, this chapter shows how the organizational strategies of think tanks are ties to how they are embedded in specific networks that enable their participation in policy or politics in specific ways and at different stages of the policy process.
