Cet article se base sur une enquête monographique de dix-neuf mois dans la marina de Dzaoudzi (Mayotte). Le lieu de l’enquête est à la fois un point de circulation et un point d’ancrage où se croisent et se distinguent différents parcours de vie. Les données empiriques obtenues par observation participante mettent en évidence ces trajectoires individuelles et les raisons multiples, mais convergentes, ayant poussé les enquêtés à faire ce choix de mode de vie qualifié d’atypique. L’apport de cette étude est de démontrer que, si les modes de vie mobiles (lifestyle mobilities) sont un but pour la majorité des enquêtés, elles peuvent se transformer en migrations motivées par la recherche d’un style de vie (lifestyle migrations) ou en mobilité temporaire. En présentant les différentes facettes de la socialisation au sein de cette communauté, l’article met également en lumière les rapports entre personnes du milieu/étrangères à ce milieu et s’interroge sur les phénomènes de précarisation et marginalisation au sein du groupe. L’étude permet également de mettre en avant les distinctions intergénérationnelles concernant les motivations liées à ce choix de mode de vie nomade. La cohésion intergénérationnelle transcende ces distinctions, les enquêtés se reconnaissant comme des pairs liés par un mode de vie basé sur une passion commune pour l’océan et l’idéal de liberté ainsi que par un rejet de la société postmoderne.
