Abstract
This chapter presents information regarding abortion practice in the United States and Canada. Such objective data is valuable in order to make well-informed and accurate assessments about the controversial positions and polices on abortion. It contains data on die incidence and demographics of the practice of abortion in the United States and Canada. The number of abortions that would be experienced by 1,000 women during their reproductive lifetime, given age-specific abortion rates. In Canada, parity refers to prior deliveries. It appears that the highest percentage distribution of women obtaining legal abortions takes place when there are no prior deliveries. The sociological aspects of abortion have been subject to a wide range of studies. Although abortion is one of the most prevalent means of fertility control worldwide, there is no comprehensive theory to explain why some women choose abortion while others do not.
