Abstract The quasifree $$\overrightarrow{\gamma } d\rightarrow \pi ^0n(p)$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mover><mml:mi>γ</mml:mi><mml:mo>→</mml:mo></mml:mover><mml:mi>d</mml:mi><mml:mo>→</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mi>π</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mi>n</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mi>p</mml:mi><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:mrow></mml:math> photon beam asymmetry, $$\varSigma $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>Σ</mml:mi></mml:math> , has been measured at photon energies, $$E_\gamma $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msub><mml:mi>E</mml:mi><mml:mi>γ</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:math> , from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. The data were collected in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron beam facility with the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters covering pion center-of-mass angles from 49 $$^\circ $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msup><mml:mrow/><mml:mo>∘</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math> to 148 $$^\circ $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:msup><mml:mrow/><mml:mo>∘</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math> . In this kinematic region, polarization observables are sensitive to contributions from the $$\varDelta (1232)$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mi>Δ</mml:mi><mml:mo>(</mml:mo><mml:mn>1232</mml:mn><mml:mo>)</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:math> and N (1440) resonances. The extracted values of $$\varSigma $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>Σ</mml:mi></mml:math> have been compared to predictions based on partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the existing pion photoproduction database. Our comparison includes the SAID, MAID and Bonn–Gatchina analyses; while a revised SAID fit, including the new $$\varSigma $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>Σ</mml:mi></mml:math> measurements, has also been performed. In addition, isospin symmetry is examined as a way to predict $$\pi ^0n$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mi>π</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mi>n</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math> photoproduction observables, based on fits to published data in the channels $$\pi ^0p$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mi>π</mml:mi><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math> , $$\pi ^+n$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mi>π</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>n</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math> and $$\pi ^-p$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mi>π</mml:mi><mml:mo>-</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math> .
